Designed with care: our support for ZSL

We’ve been supporting ZSL (Zoological Society of London) since 2018 through our Animals of the Savannah designs. Our collections are inspired by the animals of the African Savannah and ZSL’s work to protect them.

Many of you know ZSL through its wonderful zoos in London and Whipsnade, but you may not know that ZSL is a conservation charity that works in over 50 countries across the world helping to create a world where wildlife thrives.

Sophie Allport's Wild Savannah Design Supports ZSL

We’re pleased to launch our new design, Wild Savannah which forms part of the collection that supports ZSL. The design brings the natural beauty of the Wild Savannah into your home with Sophie’s hand-painted design. Created to celebrate the iconic animals that roam across the African Savannah plains, this new collection is captivating and majestic, welcoming warm earthy tones into the home.

Inspired by Sophie’s love for wildlife, each piece from the collection transports you to the heart of the Savannah, featuring illustrations of some of the incredible animals that live there, including elegant giraffes, wise elephants, graceful cheetahs, impressive rhinos and playful warthogs.

We have donated over £150,000 to ZSL

Through sales generated by Sophie Allport from the ZSL (Zoological Society of London) products, 5% of net sales with a minimum of £40,000 each year will be given to ZSL.

ZSL work to inspire change

ZSL work to restore wildlife by protecting critical species, restoring ecosystems, helping people and wildlife live together and inspiring support for nature – all driven by science. They work in areas where their expertise in science-led conservation can make the most difference to the protection of species: where they can reduce species extinction risk, improve ecosystem health, strengthen human wildlife coexistence and inspire change through close collaboration with local partners.

Their two conservation Zoos provide a home for around half of the world’s Extinct in the Wild animal species, and a total of 173 species that are threatened with extinction. Caring for those species in their zoos, and contributing to international conservation breeding programmes, ensures that a healthy and safe population are protected as a backup for the wild.

Sophie Allport's Wild Savannah Design Supports ZSL

In India and Nepal, ZSL is working with both governments to conserve the Terai Arc, a transboundary landscape of temperate forest and rich grassland that supports Asian elephants, greater one-horned rhinos, gharial, Bengal tigers and pangolins. They are working closely with local communities on the edges of protected areas to develop sustainable, nature-based livelihoods and improve coexistence with wildlife.

ZSL supports local partners in the conservation of key ecosystem engineer species, such as the black rhino, African wild dog and cheetah, across major savannah ecosystems. ZSL are a leader in cheetah conservation. The Africa Range-wide Cheetah Conservation Initiative, funded by the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, works to conserve cheetah across seven large transboundary landscapes, strengthen capacity and local leadership for cheetah conservation, foster coexistence between cheetah and local communities and maintain and restore habitat connectivity.

The CCI currently supports MSc and PhD students in Angola, Namibia, Tanzania and Benin undertaking research on cheetahs as part of its leadership training program. Additional recent initiatives include a new collaborative project across the Horn of Africa providing training for local partners to survey for cheetahs, their prey and their habitat, which has revealed a hitherto unknown cheetah population in the Somali state region of Ethiopia. CCI have also undertaken a biodiversity assessments in Angola as the first step in the potential creation of a new conservation area and fitted satellite tracking collars to cheetahs to understand their movements in relation to human impacts in and around the Serengeti National Park.
