We’re delighted to sit down with Lucy Claire Dunbar, the talented author and illustrator whose charming storytelling and beautiful artwork have captured the hearts of so many. With a passion for nature and a talent for bringing characters to life, Lucy’s work is filled with warmth, whimsy, and creativity. We caught up about her latest book The Book of Gifts!
Your personal story is incredible, can you share that with us?
Gosh, where do I begin? Illustration really started the day I was born, raised in a family of artists we were always creative. Diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at 2 was the beginning of…well I guess you could say a turbulent time with my health. Temporarily losing my sight in my early twenties, plus struggling with the weight of being in your twenties and life, I began sketching to profess my emotions. I know it sounds crazy as I couldn’t see! But I think when you have it in your heart, nothing will stand in your way. Fortunately, my sight was restored and I continued sharing on social media, making a promise to myself that I would draw every day, and make the most of every chance I have.
What inspired you to write The Book of Gifts?
People say they wear their heart on their sleeves, for me, The Book of Gifts is my heart on paper. Everything I went through, the lessons I learned from one of the darkest moments in my life, went into the book. Hopefully helping someone somewhere find the hope they need to carry on.
Who or what inspired your illustrations in the book?
Everyone. My community, people, the world. All the little things in life that mean the most to us. I like to think The Book of Gifts is a hug in a book, a place people can turn to for comfort.
You are an incredible illustrator, when did you realise you had such an amazing talent and how did you begin your career as an illustrator?
Goodness, that is a huge compliment! I think illustrating is a part of me, my parents are both extremely creative so I was always surrounded by art. My career really started after uni, very accidentally! I was posting my thoughts sketches and feelings on Instagram, and slowly but surely it became the beautiful community it is today.
Did your younger self always want to be an author and illustrator?
Gosh no! Never in a million years did I expect any of this. I dreamed of working in the fashion industry (wanting to be just like my sister!) I believe the universe has a plan and all my struggles led me to this point. Grateful for it all as I wouldn’t be where I am without them!
What homewares or home set up inspire you and make you feel creative?
A cosy seat by the fireplace with a cup of tea is always creative heaven for me!
The Book of Gifts is divided into themes, what’s your favourite theme from the book?
I think it changes often depending on what’s happening in my life at the time but probably friendship, as it truly is the greatest of gifts. I wouldn’t have made it through my most challenging times without them
What’s your favourite bouquet of flowers to receive?
Daffodils, as they will always remind me of my grandma, the brightest of souls.
What gift would lift your spirits?
Anything with food! If I can share it with friends even better.
